You may have seen that modern house built directly over a flowing waterfall, the kind of image that seems almost too peaceful to be real.

But Fallingwater is real.

Designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, the house is one of the finest examples of his philosophy of organic architecture.

For Wright, a building shouldn’t simply exist in nature. It should become part of nature.

It wasn’t a house on the mountain, but a house of the mountain.

Wright used glass, large windows, natural materials, light, water, sound, geometry, landscape, and surfaces to blur the boundary between architecture and nature. For him, nature wasn’t just trees and greenery, it included everything from natural materials to the way people experience a space.

Perhaps that’s why Fallingwater still feels less like a building placed in a forest, and more like something that grew from it.
